The company's activity began with the production of wines with grapes from the Palmela region. During the 1980s, Bacalhôa Vinhos de Portugal created a new dynamism, through a strong commitment to the most modern techniques of viticulture and oenology, creating new paradigms in the national panorama of quality wine production. In 1998, Commander José Berardo became the main shareholder and pursued the company's mission, namely investing in the planting of new vineyards, modernizing the wineries and acquiring new properties, as well as through the partnership initiated with Lafitte Rothschild at Quinta from Carmo. The company acquired Quinta do Carmo and the Lafitte Rothschild Group took some shares in the Bacalhôa Vinhos de Portugal group.
