During the British rule in the 1800’s after a fire destroyed the city of Basseterre and it was rebuilt, this clock was built in the honour of Lord Thomas Berkleley, a former president of the General Legislative Council in the 1880’s. This historic monument has four clocks facing the four streets, four water stands and seating area around the clock. Hence, the name (The Circus). This depicts the Piccadilly Square in London which host the famous clock, “Big Ben”. In St. Kitts since we were under British rule ours became, “Little Ben”.

The chief, Tegreman became suspicious when Sir Thomas Warner (the first governor of St Kitts) returned from England with African slaves and more settlers.
